Phenology is the study of seasonal patterns in nature\, observing and tracking events like when plants bloom\, leaves appear\, or fruit ripens\, and how these events change over time. \nThese guided hikes are designed to help participants practice native plant identification\, learn to use field guides\, and keep track of their observations. You are welcome to bring your own guides\, and some will be available to borrow through the Clegg Library. Along the way\, you’ll learn why birds migrate\, how they navigate such long distances\, and what to look and listen for as we explore the trail. \nWhether you’re an experienced birder or simply enjoy spending time outdoors\, this hike is a fun and relaxing way to connect with nature and appreciate the wonders of the season. \nBring your binoculars if you have them (a limited number may be available to borrow)\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and dress for the weather. DESCRIPTION:Come discover what’s living\, growing\, and buzzing at Hilltop Farm Nature Preserve! \nParticipants will use the free iNaturalist app to document native trees and plants\, pollinators\, and songbirds along the trail system at Hilltop Farm Nature Preserve. The hike combines two trail loops for a total of 2.5 miles. Hilltop Farm Nature Preserve sits on a ridgetop high above the Whitewater River valley on land formerly farmed by the Doud family. Today it serves as a natural haven for hiking and nature observation.
