Since we’ll be venturing off trail to collect native seeds\, long pants and long sleeves are strongly recommended for protection from tall vegetation\, insects\, and poison ivy. We also recommend bringing sunscreen\, insect repellent\, work gloves\, snacks\, and plenty of water. \nNote: Seasonal timing and seed availability can be hard to predict. Some workday locations and target species may change as we get a better idea of what is available and where volunteer support is most needed. Forest Bathing has its roots in the Japanese practice of “Shinrin-yoku.” This is a research-based practice and studies show a variety of physical\, mental\, and emotional health benefits\, such as better sleep\, enhanced immunity\, less stress\, increased feelings of energy\, joy\, and connection. Your Forest Bathing Guide facilitates this experience through a series of sensory-based invitations.  These simple invitations promote connection to self\, others\, and natural spaces.  Each Forest Bathing session lasts 2-3 hours\, with time built in for traveling short distances\, sitting\, exploring\, and sharing. Unlike a hike or guided nature walk\, this excursion is short\, covering only a half mile or so\, leaning on the idea: It’s more important to be here than to go there.  “

As summer gives way to autumn\, thousands of birds travel through our area on their way to their winter homes\, making this a wonderful time to explore local trails and see what feathered visitors we can find. \nThis special hike will be led by Volunteer Naturalist Jim Spier\, who will share his knowledge of local birds and migration patterns. Along the way\, you’ll learn why birds migrate\, how they navigate such long distances\, and what to look and listen for as we explore the trail. \nWhether you’re an experienced birder or simply enjoy spending time outdoors\, this hike is a fun and relaxing way to connect with nature and appreciate the wonders of the season. \nBring your binoculars if you have them (a limited number may be available to borrow)\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and dress for the weather. DESCRIPTION:Join NICHES Land Trust at Clegg Memorial Garden for our Phenology Hike series to track seasonal changes in plants throughout the 2026 growing season. Phenology is the study of seasonal patterns in nature\, observing and tracking events like when plants bloom\, leaves appear\, or fruit ripens\, and how these events change over time. \nThese guided hikes are designed to help participants practice native plant identification\, learn to use field guides\, and keep track of their observations. You are welcome to bring your own guides\, and some will be available to borrow through the Clegg Library. Please dress in layers\, wear sturdy footwear\, and bring a flashlight or headlamp with a red-light setting if you have one. This program is best suited for adults and older children comfortable walking on uneven trails after dark. \n  \nWeather Policy: Rain or shine. Join Sycamore Land Trust and David Rupp of Indigo Birding at Sam Shine Foundation Preserve as we take part in this worldwide effort. We’ll spend the morning birding the restored meadows and wetlands\, exploring the diverse habitats that make this preserve a hotspot during fall migration. \nExpect a mix of year-round residents and fall migrants as we contribute our observations to eBird\, helping build a global snapshot of bird movement during this October Big Day! This hike is in partnership with Indiana Audubon and the Indiana Land Trust Alliance. \nThis event is part of the Indiana Land Trust Days\, a statewide celebration of conservation featuring special events hosted by land trusts across Indiana\, highlighting the importance of protecting and caring for the places that make our state unique.
