As summer gives way to autumn\, thousands of birds travel through our area on their way to their winter homes\, making this a wonderful time to explore local trails and see what feathered visitors we can find. \nThis special hike will be led by Volunteer Naturalist Jim Spier\, who will share his knowledge of local birds and migration patterns. Along the way\, you’ll learn why birds migrate\, how they navigate such long distances\, and what to look and listen for as we explore the trail. \nWhether you’re an experienced birder or simply enjoy spending time outdoors\, this hike is a fun and relaxing way to connect with nature and appreciate the wonders of the season. \nBring your binoculars if you have them (a limited number may be available to borrow)\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and dress for the weather. You never know what birds we’ll spot along the trail! \n  \nWhat to Bring: Long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended. SUMMARY:Project Native Harvest: Farris Estate
DESCRIPTION:Help restore natural areas! \nAs NICHES staff and volunteers restore habitats and remove invasive plant species from our preserves\, we can help reduce reinvasion and rebuild biodiversity by collecting locally sourced native seeds for habitat restoration. \nFor this year’s effort\, we will be hosting seed collection workdays every Friday (1:00 pm -4:00 pm) between July 31st and October 23rd. \nPlease dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear suitable for working outdoors. Since we’ll be venturing off trail to collect native seeds\, long pants and long sleeves are strongly recommended for protection from tall vegetation\, insects\, and poison ivy. We also recommend bringing sunscreen\, insect repellent\, work gloves\, snacks\, and plenty of water. \nNote: Seasonal timing and seed availability can be hard to predict. Some workday locations and target species may change as we get a better idea of what is available and where volunteer support is most needed. The hike combines two trail loops for a total of 2.5 miles. Hilltop Farm Nature Preserve sits on a ridgetop high above the Whitewater River valley on land formerly farmed by the Doud family. Today it serves as a natural haven for hiking and nature observation.
