SUMMARY:Project Native Harvest: Shawnee Bottoms
DESCRIPTION:Help restore natural areas! \nAs NICHES staff and volunteers restore habitats and remove invasive plant species from our preserves\, we can help reduce reinvasion and rebuild biodiversity by collecting locally sourced native seeds for habitat restoration. \nFor this year’s effort\, we will be hosting seed collection workdays every Friday (1:00 pm -4:00 pm) between July 31st and October 23rd. \nPlease dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear suitable for working outdoors. Since we’ll be venturing off trail to collect native seeds\, long pants and long sleeves are strongly recommended for protection from tall vegetation\, insects\, and poison ivy. We also recommend bringing sunscreen\, insect repellent\, work gloves\, snacks\, and plenty of water. \nNote: Seasonal timing and seed availability can be hard to predict. Some workday locations and target species may change as we get a better idea of what is available and where volunteer support is most needed. Participants will be notified by email of any location changes immediately! \nThis event is part of Indiana Land Trust Days. Phenology is the study of seasonal patterns in nature\, observing and tracking events like when plants bloom\, leaves appear\, or fruit ripens\, and how these events change over time. \nThese guided hikes are designed to help participants practice native plant identification\, learn to use field guides\, and keep track of their observations. You are welcome to bring your own guides\, and some will be available to borrow through the Clegg Library. Please dress in layers\, wear sturdy footwear\, and bring a flashlight or headlamp with a red-light setting if you have one. This program is best suited for adults and older children comfortable walking on uneven trails after dark. \n  \nWeather Policy: Rain or shine.
